Questions surrounding the historic designation of one of Wisconsin's best-known landmarks have been resolved after federal officials confirmed the site's National Historic Landmark status remains unchanged despite its relocation.
The U.S. Department of the Interior has confirmed that the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin, continues to hold its National Historic Landmark designation following its move to a new location in 2023.
According to federal officials, National Historic Landmark status remains in place unless it is voluntarily relinquished by the property owner or withdrawn by the Secretary of the Interior. The department stated that neither action has occurred, allowing the landmark to remain listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The clarification follows earlier correspondence that suggested the relocation could require the landmark to undergo a new designation process.
The announcement comes as Wisconsin continues activities tied to the nationwide America 250 commemoration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The Wisconsin America 250 Commission is coordinating events throughout the state during 2026, including participation in major public celebrations and historical programs. Planning efforts also included contributions to a national time capsule that will remain sealed until the country's 500th anniversary.
Historic preservation projects frequently involve balancing relocation, restoration and regulatory requirements while protecting nationally significant structures. For owners, preservation specialists and construction professionals working on historic buildings, the confirmation highlights the importance of coordinating with federal preservation agencies when undertaking work that could affect a property's historic designation.
