Mass Pike Bridge Work on Track, More Closures Ahead

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) confirmed that the first of several planned weekend closures on the Massachusetts Turnpike near the Interstate 95 interchange wrapped up on schedule, but more delays are on the horizon as part of a massive infrastructure overhaul in the Newton-Weston area.
Over the weekend, crews closed all but one lane in both directions of I-90 between exits 123 and 125 to carry out demolition work on an aging bridge structure. The effort is a key component of the $230 million I-90/I-95 Interchange improvement project, which includes the rehabilitation of eight bridges and full replacement of five.

MassDOT described the work as highly coordinated and time-sensitive. The process involves demolishing old bridge structures, transporting pre-fabricated bridge units to the site, and installing them in place — all before the Monday morning rush hour.
“This is going to ensure long-term there are no safety issues and no surprise closures because we have to do some emergency repairs,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver.
Heavy Traffic, Careful Planning
The stretch of highway affected sees about 100,000 vehicles a day, including weekends, raising concerns among officials about major traffic backups. Fortunately, the weekend operation proceeded without significant delays, as many commuters followed guidance to steer clear of the work zone.
“My best advice was for people to avoid the area, if possible. If not, leave early and give yourself a lot of extra time,” Gulliver emphasized.
MassDOT released maps and signage ahead of time to help direct drivers onto alternate routes. Still, with multiple future closures planned, travelers in Greater Boston are being urged to prepare for continued disruptions through the summer.
The next full weekend closure for this segment of the Pike is scheduled from 9 p.m. on Friday, June 20 through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 23, again between exits 123 and 125.
Why the Project Matters
Though the project brings short-term pain for drivers, MassDOT officials argue it is essential for long-term efficiency and safety. The I-90/I-95 interchange is one of the most heavily traveled junctions in Massachusetts and has long been in need of modernization to reduce congestion and wear.
“Overall, this work will make this interchange more modernized,” MassDOT stated in its update. The new bridge designs and highway improvements aim to enhance safety, minimize future maintenance needs, and create a smoother driving experience.
The use of pre-fabricated bridge units, part of an accelerated bridge construction technique, allows MassDOT to limit the closure window to weekends rather than months-long shutdowns.
As the summer progresses, residents can expect regular updates and detour alerts from MassDOT as the state continues executing one of the region’s most ambitious interchange rehabilitation efforts in years.
