Meta is taking a major step to strengthen America’s role in the accelerating artificial intelligence revolution. The company has pledged to invest more than $600 billion in the United States by 2028, focusing on the construction of advanced AI data centers, job creation, and community-focused infrastructure improvements. The initiative reflects Meta’s belief that developing AI within the U.S. is essential for national competitiveness and innovation.

The investments aim to support the latest generation of AI model development, including large-scale training capabilities for generative AI products like Meta AI, Llama models, and future immersive technologies. The company noted that its data center growth strategy is already fuelling economic momentum across many regions of the country.

Since 2010, Meta’s data center projects have created over 30,000 skilled trade jobs during construction phases and 5,000 ongoing operations roles. Working closely with U.S.-based general contractors and manufacturing firms, Meta said its expansions have generated more than $20 billion in business for subcontractors — extending into critical trades such as steel fabrication, concrete construction, electricians, pipefitters, fiber installation specialists, HVAC professionals and technology system integrators.

Meta's massive campuses are being redesigned and retrofitted to support AI-optimized architecture, including liquid-cooling systems, advanced networking, high-density server storage and resilient cybersecurity frameworks. The company's long-term strategy includes transforming existing cloud-style facilities into next-generation AI infrastructure sites.

Responsible Energy + Water Commitments

Meta said it coordinates directly with utilities to plan and pay for the additional energy needed to power its AI infrastructure. To date, these collaborations have led to:

  • 15 gigawatts of new renewable and traditional power added to U.S. grids
  • Hundreds of millions in grid modernization
  • New transmission lines and substation expansions

The company continues to focus on sustainability. It has committed to achieving water positivity by 2030 — meaning its conservation and watershed restoration efforts will exceed the water consumed by operations. Meta is incorporating closed-loop cooling, low-water landscaping and stormwater capture to minimize local usage. The company has already launched watershed recovery initiatives in areas affected by drought and climate-driven water scarcity.

Ongoing Community Investment

Beyond infrastructure and technology, Meta emphasizes community-first development. The company invests in:

✔ Local infrastructure improvements
✔ Workforce training programs
✔ STEAM education partnerships
✔ Local hiring among contractors and suppliers
✔ Small business engagement and support

Meta has contributed $58 million in Data Center Community Action Grants to public schools, nonprofits and civic organizations. These funds have been used to:

  • Expand STEM education and robotics programs
  • Provide vocational training for transitioning military veterans
  • Support digital literacy and career readiness
  • Enable food and household utility assistance programs for seniors and families

Meta says it takes pride in ensuring that communities benefit directly when data center facilities arrive. It says investments in broadband access, emergency services and local roads have ensured lasting improvements even beyond tech operations.

Looking Ahead: Scaling AI Demand

Meta said that demand for powerful data processing will continue to grow as AI usage expands across businesses and households. The company plans to increase its footprint significantly to keep pace while balancing environmental responsibility and community advancement.

Its U.S. data center initiative positions Meta as one of the largest private industrial investors in American history, helping reinforce the nation’s leadership in emerging technologies.
