Nashville Airport Opens Expanded Concourse D as Part of $3B Plan

Nashville International Airport has opened its newly expanded Concourse D — the first major milestone of its $3 billion New Horizon development plan to handle the city’s booming passenger growth. The $247 million project was completed on time and under budget, the airport announced.

The design-build team included Hensel Phelps, based in Greeley, Colorado, and Denver-headquartered Fentress Architects. Hensel Phelps also delivered the original Concourse D and Terminal Wings project. The expansion employed 715 workers, with nearly 80% coming from the local workforce.

The 161,854-square-foot extension officially opened July 8, adding five new gates to bring Concourse D’s total to 11. Passengers will also find a moving walkway, eight new restaurant and retail spaces, three public art pieces and the airport’s first outdoor terrace with sweeping views of the airfield and downtown Nashville.

In 2022, the airport kicked off design for New Horizon, its second major expansion program, to accommodate surging passenger demand as Nashville continues to grow rapidly.

“The completion of the Concourse D extension—on time and under budget—not only marks a major milestone for the New Horizon program, but it also gives us the space and resources needed to turn our attention to upcoming projects, such as the demolition and reconstruction of Concourse A, the creation of a Central Ramp and improved terminal roadways,” said Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.

The entire New Horizon program is scheduled to wrap by 2029, enabling the airport to serve an expected 40 million annual passengers.

What’s Next for BNA

The New Horizon plan includes more than just expanded gates. In the coming years, Nashville International Airport will:

  • Demolish and rebuild Concourse A.
  • Develop a new Central Ramp to handle increased aircraft traffic.
  • Upgrade terminal roadways to smooth passenger flow.
  • Add more retail and dining options.

BNA’s rapid growth mirrors Nashville’s booming population and economy, making the expansion crucial for keeping up with demand and maintaining the airport’s reputation as one of the nation’s fastest-growing hubs.
