Elm Grove Companies recently celebrated the grand opening of the Woolen Mill Apartments, a major redevelopment project delivering 70 new affordable housing units to Newport, New Hampshire. The project transformed a historic textile mill, originally constructed in 1905, into contemporary living spaces that range from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Each unit features modern amenities including stainless steel appliances and hardwood floors, with design highlights like 12-foot ceilings and scenic views of the Sugar River. The apartments are fully reserved for income-eligible residents under the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, ensuring access to affordable housing options.

Elm Grove Companies, which currently manages over 600 workforce housing units statewide, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Woolen Mill Apartments. The project received vital support from New Hampshire Housing, InvestNH, ReArch, the Town of Newport, and various other partners.

Rob Dapice, CEO of New Hampshire Housing, praised the project, stating, “The Woolen Mill Apartments will provide vital affordable housing solutions in the local community, fostering stability and opportunity for residents. We commend Elm Grove, Jon Livadas, and their partners for their dedication to addressing the need for more homes in our state.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Monday, June 9th at 10 a.m. at 169 Sunapee Street in Newport. Local officials, development partners, and community members will attend to mark this milestone.

Meanwhile, in Salem, developers are preparing to break ground on a new police station after a lengthy planning and approval process. Residents are invited to join the groundbreaking ceremony at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the construction site.

The Police Department recently moved from its original Veterans Memorial Parkway location to a temporary facility on Cross Street. Meanwhile, demolition crews have cleared the old station, paving the way for construction of a modern two-story facility. The new police station, expected to be completed by fall 2026, will include updated technological and electrical systems, larger dedicated spaces for interviews, holding cells, booking, and specialized investigative units.

The current station, built in the 1960s and designed for just 14 officers, no longer meets the needs of a growing town and police force. “The new building is being designed with expansion in mind as the department and the town continue to grow over the next 50 to 60 years,” officials said.

The Salem town voters approved nearly $40 million for the project in March 2024, reflecting strong community support for public safety infrastructure improvements.
