Members of the Three Affiliated Tribes Business Council visited the construction site of the upcoming Son of Star Casino in White Shield on Friday, Oct. 10, marking a significant milestone in one of the tribe’s largest economic development projects in recent years.
Although the casino is still far from completion, project architect Erik Wedge of DSGW offered attendees a first glimpse into the vision for the building through a series of digital renderings. Wedge emphasized the flexibility of the ongoing construction process, saying the structure remains an “open canvas” that will allow the tribe to incorporate cultural elements and layout changes as the project evolves.
The tribe first announced plans for the 37,000-square-foot entertainment facility in September 2023, envisioning it as more than just a gaming venue. According to early concept materials reported by the Minot Daily News, the casino is expected to “reflect the culture and traditions of MHA Nation”, with design influences drawn from tribal art, symbolism, and storytelling.
Located just south of the community’s powwow grounds, the new development aims to serve as both a revenue generator and a cultural landmark. Tribal leaders say it could eventually include not only gaming floors but also dining, live entertainment, and space for community events.
While no official opening date has been announced, plans continue to target sometime in 2026. Council members who toured the site expressed optimism that the project would provide long-term economic opportunities for MHA Nation, including jobs, turism, and reinvestment into public services.
Additional infrastructure improvements in the surrounding area — such as roadway access and utility upgrades — are also expected to follow as construction advances. Community members have voiced anticipation about the casino’s role in transforming White Shield into a regional destination.
As work continues, Wedge reiterated that tribal input remains central to the design process. “The building is an open canvas at this point,” he said, indicating that further recommendations will be welcomed before construction moves into its next phase.
