School districts across California continue advancing campus modernization programs aimed at expanding instructional capacity and upgrading student facilities. In Oakland, construction is beginning on a major expansion project at Coliseum College Preparatory Academy that will add academic, athletic and community-use space to the campus.
C. Overaa & Co. joined Oakland Unified School District and project partners for the recent groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction activities.
The project includes construction of a new high school classroom wing containing 14 classrooms and two science laboratories designed to support expanded academic programming.
Plans also call for development of a gymnasium equipped with training and weight rooms, along with upgraded outdoor areas intended for learning, recreation and community use.
The project is being delivered through a progressive design-build model involving Overaa and design partner Noll & Tam Architects.
Additional project participants include Brailsford & Dunlavey, Shah Kawasaki Architects, BKF Engineers, Alter Consulting Engineers, Degenkolb Engineers, Merrill Morris Partners and Terraphase Engineering.
According to project information released by Oakland Unified School District, the expansion is intended to support long-term educational and college readiness initiatives at Coliseum College Preparatory Academy.
District officials also highlighted ongoing partnerships with Peralta Colleges tied to dual-enrollment and early college access programs that allow students to earn college credits while completing high school coursework.
Funding for the project includes support from Oakland’s Measure Y bond program approved by local voters.
California school districts continue pursuing bond-funded modernization and expansion programs focused on classroom capacity, science and technical education facilities, athletic infrastructure and campus safety improvements.
Progressive design-build delivery methods have become increasingly common on K-12 projects because they allow districts to integrate contractor input earlier in the planning and budgeting process.
Education construction programs across urban districts also continue emphasizing flexible learning environments, outdoor instructional space and facilities designed for broader community use.
For contractors and public owners, the Coliseum College Preparatory Academy project reflects sustained investment in K-12 modernization programs across California.
The project also demonstrates continued demand for collaborative delivery approaches and multi-disciplinary teams capable of managing active campus construction and community-focused educational infrastructure projects.
