The mechanical contracting industry continues to invest in developing students who are preparing for careers in construction and the skilled trades. Christian Holden, a Kent State University construction management student, has received a $2,500 scholarship established through the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau (NCPWB).
The Robert J. Durr, Sr. UA/NCPWB Partnering Scholarship was established in honor of Robert J. Durr Sr., a former chairman of the NCPWB Board of Trustees. His work helped strengthen collaboration between the United Association and NCPWB and contributed to the development of the Joint Welder Testing Program.
Holden received the scholarship during the Mechanical Contractors Association of America's Awards of Excellence Breakfast in Phoenix earlier this year.
Holden is completing a degree in Construction Management at Kent State University and is expected to graduate in May 2028. He joined the university's student chapter during his first year.
Holden has already gained practical experience through internships with mechanical contracting companies. He previously worked with Nelson Stark and spent the summer of 2026 interning with S.A. Comunale Company.
His interest in mechanical contracting is also connected to his family background, with his father working as a union plumber in Cincinnati. The combination of academic training, student chapter involvement and internship experience is providing Holden with exposure to multiple aspects of the construction industry.
Scholarships such as the Robert J. Durr, Sr. award provide financial support while connecting students with the mechanical contracting community. Programs supported by industry associations and foundations also give students opportunities to develop professional relationships before entering the workforce.
Holden's scholarship adds to those workforce development efforts by supporting a student pursuing construction management and gaining direct experience with mechanical contractors.
