From Jan. 1 through Dec. 18, the city issued 1,505 residential building permits, representing more than 2.6 million square feet of development and an estimated valuation of roughly $359 million. Those totals significantly outpaced 2024, when Oxford issued 793 residential permits, underscoring the city’s sustained growth and demand for housing.

Single-family homes accounted for a substantial share of the activity, with 417 permits issued in 2025 and a combined valuation approaching $149 million. Multifamily construction remained a dominant force as well, as apartment buildings, condominiums and townhouses collectively accounted for 875 permits and more than $180 million in construction value. The continued emphasis on multifamily housing reflects demand driven by population growth, university-related expansion and workforce needs.

Commercial construction also maintained strong momentum throughout the year. Oxford issued 235 commercial building permits totaling approximately 1.5 million square feet, with a combined valuation of about $73.8 million. New commercial construction represented around $16.2 million of that total, while shell buildings and additions made up a large portion of both square footage and overall valuation. By comparison, the city issued 119 commercial permits in 2024, highlighting a sharp year-over-year increase.

Beyond primary building projects, permitting activity for electrical, mechanical, plumbing, gas and fire-related work contributed thousands of additional permits and tens of millions of dollars in valuation. Water and sewer authorizations alone accounted for nearly $138.2 million across 494 permits, emphasizing the scale of infrastructure investment required to support Oxford’s ongoing development.

City officials point to the sustained volume of permits as evidence of continued demand for housing, commercial space and supporting infrastructure as Oxford’s population and local economy expand. The steady pace of construction suggests the city is still in an active growth phase, with no immediate signs of slowdown heading into 2026.

With residential neighborhoods, multifamily complexes, commercial developments and infrastructure projects all moving forward simultaneously, Oxford’s construction boom continues to reshape the city and reinforce its position as one of Mississippi’s fastest-growing areas.
