Construction has begun on a major school modernization project in Colchester, Vermont, aimed at expanding educational space and improving facilities for early elementary students. PC Construction has started the Union Memorial School additions and renovations project, which will provide new classroom space while upgrading existing buildings through a phased construction approach.
The project centers on construction of a new two-story, 50,000-square-foot east wing with a full basement that will provide additional instructional space and updated building systems.
The existing west wing will undergo renovation totaling approximately 14,000 square feet. Work includes interior improvements, exterior siding replacement and selective demolition to support a revised building layout designed for pre-kindergarten through second-grade education.
Initial site work includes removal of an existing septic field, installation of a new septic system and pump station, and relocation of a gas line that conflicts with the new building footprint. A temporary gas line is being installed to maintain uninterrupted service to the occupied school during construction.
Structural steel erection for the new addition is scheduled to begin in September following completion of early utility and site work.
The Union Memorial School project builds on PC Construction's ongoing work with the Colchester School District. The company previously began construction of the Porters Point School, another facility serving pre-kindergarten through second-grade students in the community.
School districts continue investing in modern educational facilities that support growing enrollment, updated learning environments and improved building performance. Delivering phased construction while schools remain operational requires careful coordination to maintain safety and minimize disruption for students and staff.
