Major hospital construction in Ontario has entered its next phase as foundation work begins on a large healthcare redevelopment project in Mississauga. The milestone advances a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure that will expand hospital capacity and support future demand across one of Canada's fastest-growing regions.
PCL Construction, through ED+PCL Healthcare Partners, has reached a key construction milestone with the start of concrete foundation work for The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children.
The hospital redevelopment is designed as a digitally connected healthcare campus that will integrate acute care with outpatient, community and virtual healthcare services. The project is intended to improve access to specialized care while supporting the needs of Mississauga's growing population.
Construction activities include foundation footings, walls and structural columns as work transitions from excavation into vertical building development.
Project work continues to advance on schedule, with excavation exceeding 78% completion across a site covering approximately 250,000 square feet. Seven tower cranes have been installed to support ongoing structural construction.
Additional infrastructure improvements include a new roundabout on Bronte College Court that is expected to open during the summer to improve site access throughout construction.
The redevelopment is being delivered through a partnership that includes Trillium Health Partners, Infrastructure Ontario and ED+PCL Healthcare Partners, with EllisDon and PCL Construction serving as the construction partners.
Ontario continues to invest in major hospital expansion projects to address long-term healthcare capacity needs. Large healthcare developments such as the Mississauga redevelopment require extensive coordination among owners, contractors, designers and public agencies while maintaining schedule and budget targets.
For construction owners, contractors and developers, the project demonstrates continued demand for complex institutional construction, digital healthcare facilities and large-scale public infrastructure programs that will support healthcare delivery for decades.
