QTS Plans $10B Data Center Campus in Iowa

American data center developer Quality Technology Services (QTS) has unveiled plans for a massive $10 billion technology campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, marking one of the largest single data infrastructure investments in the state’s history.

The project, developed in close partnership with the City of Cedar Rapids, will span 612 acres in Alliant Energy’s Big Cedar Industrial Center. Upon completion, the campus will feature seven state-of-the-art data center buildings, purpose-built to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and other high-performance digital applications.

Construction is expected to generate a significant economic boost for the region, with estimates of 2,000 combined construction and permanent jobs over the life of the project. Local officials have described the investment as a major win for Iowa’s technology sector and its positioning as a competitive data hub in the Midwest.

QTS is also emphasizing sustainability in its buildout. The company is partnering with Alliant Energy to incorporate water-free cooling systems and to power the facility with carbon-free energy sources. This approach aligns with industry-wide shifts toward greener, more energy-efficient infrastructure.

“As AI continues to transform industries, the need for secure and scalable infrastructure has never been more critical,” said Tag Greason and David Robey, co-chief executives of QTS. “This project reflects Iowa’s leadership in embracing the future of technology, and we’re proud to invest in a state that prioritises innovation, sustainability, and community partnership.”

Local leaders believe the presence of such a large-scale facility will also create opportunities for secondary economic growth, including new supplier contracts, expanded workforce training programs, and increased demand for regional construction services. The project’s sustainable design is expected to help Cedar Rapids maintain its commitment to responsible growth while positioning Iowa as a leader in advanced technology development.

Once operational, the campus will serve a range of enterprise and government clients, providing secure, high-capacity infrastructure that is becoming increasingly essential in the digital economy. Industry analysts note that the investment underscores the critical role of Midwestern states in supporting national data capacity as coastal tech markets face power, space, and cost constraints.
