BLACKFOOT, Idaho — The Idaho Transportation Department is scheduled to begin construction Monday on a replacement project for the Riverton Road Bridge near Blackfoot after the existing structure sustained major damage in a semi-truck crash last year.

According to transportation officials, the current bridge was damaged in October 2025 when a semi crashed into one of the structure’s support pillars, prompting plans for a full replacement.
The project will involve demolishing the existing bridge and constructing a new two-span steel girder bridge designed to accommodate future widening along Interstate 15.
Construction activities are expected to continue through November.
Transportation officials said demolition work will occur over three nights from May 18 through May 20, requiring full closures of Interstate 15 at Riverton Road during overnight operations.
During those closures, interstate traffic will be detoured between Exit 89 and Exit 93.
The Idaho Transportation Department said motorists should expect reduced speed limits of 65 mph throughout the construction zone during the duration of the project.
Access across Interstate 15 using the Riverton Road bridge will remain closed until construction is completed later this year.
Officials said the new bridge design will improve long-term transportation capacity by supporting future interstate expansion plans in the area.
The transportation department is encouraging drivers to monitor travel conditions and construction updates through the state’s Idaho 511 traveler information system.
Drivers can access updates online, by phone or through the mobile application during the construction season.

Bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects continue to be a major focus for transportation agencies nationwide as states work to modernize aging infrastructure and improve highway safety.
Projects involving interstate bridge replacements often require staged demolition and temporary traffic detours to minimize disruptions while maintaining safety for motorists and construction crews.
The Riverton Road Bridge project represents part of Idaho’s broader effort to maintain critical transportation infrastructure and prepare major highway corridors for future growth and increased traffic demand.
