Sioux Falls Launches Multiple Summer Road Projects Impacting Major Routes

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) — Drivers in Sioux Falls should prepare for several new road construction projects starting Friday, which will bring temporary closures, traffic pattern changes, and lane shifts throughout the city.
The City of Sioux Falls is urging motorists to reduce speeds and remain cautious while navigating construction zones. Alternate routes are strongly encouraged where available to ease congestion.

Cliff Avenue Lane Closure Begins Friday
Beginning Friday, June 6, 2025, the northbound lanes of South Cliff Avenue between the Big Sioux River bridge and Tomar Road will close for infrastructure improvements. The work includes concrete joint and partial-depth repairs, as well as upgrades to curbs and gutters.
“One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the newly repaired southbound lanes,” said city officials. “In the upcoming weeks, the lane closures on Cliff Avenue will vary, but at least one lane in each direction will always remain open.”
Crews will ensure continued access to homes, parks, businesses, and side streets whenever feasible. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by mid-August 2025.
Downtown Alley Closure to Affect Access Near Walnut Street
Starting Monday, June 9, 2025, the north 100 feet of the alley located between North Dakota Avenue and North Main Avenue—just south of Walnut Street—will be closed for utility upgrades performed by the Light, Power and Traffic Division of Public Works.
“The work is expected to take approximately two weeks,” stated the department. “Pedestrians may need to use alternate walkways during this period.”
Business owners in the area have been informed in advance, and access coordination is underway to minimize disruptions to deliveries and daily operations.
Roundabout Progress at 85th Street and Heritage Parkway
Traffic flow is set to improve at the intersection of 85th Street and Heritage Parkway as the new roundabout opens to northbound and southbound vehicles on Friday. However, 85th Street itself remains closed to eastbound and westbound traffic immediately adjacent to the roundabout.
Contractors are still completing final restoration work at the intersection and continuing with road reconstruction along 85th Street between Heritage Parkway and Sundowner Avenue. This portion of the project will likely wrap up later this summer.
“Drivers are urged to use caution and remain alert while adjusting to the new traffic pattern,” officials emphasized.
More Summer Construction Projects Ahead
The City of Sioux Falls plans to release additional updates regarding summer paving, maintenance, and sidewalk projects in the coming weeks. As the summer season brings higher traffic volumes, city engineers are prioritizing safe and efficient traffic flow around work zones.
“We appreciate the community’s patience as we invest in safer, smoother roads,” said a Public Works spokesperson. “Please be mindful of crews and obey all posted signs in construction areas.”
Project updates and detour maps are available on the city’s Public Works website and social media pages.
