Spokane Launches Rockwood Boulevard Construction Near Sacred Heart

Caroline Raffetto

SPOKANE, Wash. — Major construction is set to begin next week near Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital as the city of Spokane moves forward with improvements to Rockwood Boulevard.

The project, which focuses on modernizing infrastructure and improving safety, will address pavement conditions, redesign the intersection at Rockwood Boulevard, Cowley Street, and 10th Avenue, and replace outdated underground utilities. Crews will install new water main pipes, upgrade a section of sewer lines, and replace brick catch basins, bringing critical updates to aging systems in the area.

Beginning Tuesday, drivers can expect significant traffic changes. Rockwood Boulevard between Grand Boulevard and Cowley Street will be reduced, though north-south traffic will remain open at the Summer Avenue and 10th Avenue intersection. East-west drivers, however, will face closures on Summer Avenue and 10th Avenue between Grand Boulevard and Sherman Street.

To maintain access to the Providence healthcare employee parking garage, 9th Avenue will be narrowed to one lane in each direction. On-street metered parking will also be unavailable during the project along 9th Avenue between Grand Boulevard and Cowley Street, as well as along Rockwood Boulevard in the same stretch. Sidewalk detours will be in place to ensure pedestrian safety.

The work is scheduled to continue through mid-October, and city officials stress the importance of driver awareness and community support during the construction period. “The city asks everyone to slow down and make an extra effort to support businesses impacted by this work,” officials said in a statement.

Located next to one of Spokane’s busiest medical hubs, the project is designed to improve traffic flow and strengthen infrastructure for residents, hospital staff, and visitors alike. Once complete, the upgraded intersections and utility systems will better serve the growing medical district and surrounding neighborhoods.
