Ames, IA - Story Construction, a prominent employee-owned construction company based in Ames, is expanding its footprint into Sioux City following its acquisition of L&L Builders Co. This strategic move marks an exciting new chapter for both companies and strengthens Story Construction’s presence in the region.

“I’m so proud of what this firm has accomplished throughout its history and in the 10 years I’ve been with the company,” said Joel Jarman, president of L&L Builders Co. “We’re excited to see our people continue to thrive and grow in this next chapter under the leadership and support of Story Construction.”

Founded in 1960, L&L Builders initially specialized in masonry work but grew into a full-service general contractor, with expertise in healthcare, manufacturing, government, hospitality, and historic restoration. The company completes approximately $30 million in projects each year.

As part of the acquisition, Story Construction has confirmed that L&L Builders' workforce will remain in place, and the company’s leadership team will continue to operate under the new ownership.

“The acquisition demonstrates Story Construction’s commitment to growth as an employee-owned company, both in people and in geographic reach,” the press release stated.

Mike Espeset, president of Story Construction, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, noting, “L&L’s long-standing reputation and commitment to its partners and clients aligns perfectly with our vision for growth. We look forward to continuing to deliver for those in the Sioux-land region and expand the reach of Story Construction.”

Founded in 1934, Story Construction has built a strong reputation for its work in a variety of sectors, including education, water treatment, and commercial construction. The company has been a key player in large-scale projects, such as the construction of new high schools in Ames and Cedar Falls.

In 2022, Story Construction transitioned to an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), allowing all employees to benefit from the company’s financial success.

In an interview with the Daily, Espeset said, “This acquisition gives us more scale to serve customers, develop and grow our team members in their careers, and ultimately add value to our employee owners in our employee stock ownership plan (ESOP).”

With 90 years in business, Story Construction continues to demonstrate its dedication to growth and community impact.
