PROVO, UT — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will begin the reconstruction of the University Avenue (U.S. Route 189) bridge in Provo on October 1, 2025. The project replaces the aging bridge with a modern structure designed to serve drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians while improving regional connectivity.
“This bridge is a vital connection for both Provo residents and regional travelers,” said UDOT Project Manager Andy Spencer. “Because of how crucial this road is, the new design will focus on enhancing safety and mobility while creating a more comfortable experience for everyone who uses it.”
Two lanes in each direction for reliable vehicle flow.
Dedicated six-foot bike lanes on both sides to improve safety.
Wider eight-foot sidewalks on each side to accommodate foot traffic.
A 12-foot multi-use trail on the west side connecting 500 South and 600 South for recreation and commuting.
Improved sight lines for drivers and a 10-foot-tall protective fence over the railroad tracks.
Initial work from October 1 through mid-October will focus on site preparation and demolition planning, with no immediate traffic disruptions. Major west-side demolition begins late October, followed by phased reconstruction through fall 2026. Once the west side is complete, crews will shift to the east side, with work continuing until fall 2027.
UDOT will maintain one lane open in each direction during daytime hours to minimize traffic disruptions. Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.
Traffic and Safety Guidance
Drivers and residents are encouraged to stay informed through the UDOT Traffic website or the UDOT Traffic app. Updates will also be available on UDOT’s social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
The reconstruction project is expected to improve daily commutes, increase pedestrian and cyclist accessibility, and provide a safer crossing over the existing railroad tracks. The addition of the multi-use trail also supports Provo’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities and active transportation.
“We appreciate the patience of residents and commuters while we work to deliver a bridge that meets the needs of everyone,” Spencer added.
With careful planning and phased construction, UDOT aims to minimize disruptions while ensuring that the University Avenue Bridge remains a key corridor connecting neighborhoods and supporting regional growth for decades to come.
