According to the San Antonio Police Department, the incident occurred around 10:19 p.m. Friday in the 3900 block of Wiseman Boulevard, near U.S. Highway 151 and Loop 1604.

Officers responding to the scene found a construction worker who had been working near a transformer when it suddenly exploded. The transformer was positioned close to a gas tank, raising concerns about the potential for a larger fire or secondary blast.

“According to SAPD, a worker suffered possible life-threatening burns after a transformer located near a gas tank suddenly exploded.”

The injured worker was transported to a local hospital. Authorities have not released the worker’s identity, and the individual’s current condition remains unknown.

Emergency Response and Scene Management

Police said officers secured the area and assisted with traffic control to allow emergency crews to work safely. The San Antonio Fire Department responded to contain hazards and ensure no additional flare-ups or structural risks remained at the site.

Given the proximity of the transformer to a gas tank, first responders evaluated the scene for lingering fire or explosion threats. Officials have not confirmed whether the gas tank was damaged in the blast.

The site was stabilized overnight, but investigators remained on scene into the early morning hours to assess the cause of the explosion.

Investigation Into Cause

Authorities have not yet determined what triggered the transformer to explode. Investigators will likely examine whether the incident was related to electrical malfunction, equipment failure or jobsite safety conditions.

Construction sites frequently rely on temporary power infrastructure, including transformers positioned near heavy equipment and fuel storage. While such setups are common, improper placement or maintenance can increase risk.

At this stage, officials have not indicated whether any safety violations contributed to the incident. It is also unclear whether state or federal workplace safety regulators will conduct a separate review.

“The worker's condition remains unknown at this time.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected as officials gather more information.
