Balfour Beatty Breaks Ground on $385M Grand Hyatt Miami Beach

Construction has officially begun on the highly anticipated Grand Hyatt Miami Beach, with Balfour Beatty mobilizing its operations in Florida to lead the massive development on behalf of MB Mixed Use Investment, LLC, a joint venture between Terra Group and Turnberry. The 17-story hotel will be a transformative addition to the Miami Beach Convention Center District, serving as a central anchor that is expected to enhance the city’s status as a premier global destination for conventions, events, and tourism.

The project, valued at nearly $385 million, encompasses approximately 996,130 square feet and will feature 800 luxury guestrooms, a substantial amount of meeting and convention space, and ground-floor retail areas that will contribute to the vibrancy and accessibility of the area. In addition to its function as a hospitality hub, the development is expected to bring major economic and employment benefits to the community.

“This project further strengthens our diverse business portfolio in South Florida, where hospitality continues to be an anchor market sector throughout Florida,” said Scott Skidelsky, Balfour Beatty President of Southeast Buildings Operations. “We are excited to partner with Terra Group and Turnberry, two highly regarded developers in South Florida, to deliver this transformative project for the Miami Beach community. We look forward to leveraging the experience of our South Florida team, who bring extensive expertise in the successful delivery of high-rise projects, hospitality and convention spaces."

Balfour Beatty’s selection for the Grand Hyatt Miami Beach reflects its growing reputation as a premier hospitality builder in Florida. The firm’s track record includes the $1.2 billion Broward Convention Center & Hotel expansion project, underscoring its capability to handle complex, large-scale developments in the region.

Located at the intersection of 17th Street and Convention Center Drive, the site is strategically positioned to complement the newly renovated Miami Beach Convention Center. City officials and stakeholders anticipate that the Grand Hyatt will significantly boost Miami Beach’s capacity to attract large-scale conventions and elevate the city's appeal in the competitive hospitality and event landscape.

The hotel is slated for completion in late 2027, and at peak construction, the project will employ more than 500 workers, generating both short-term and long-term employment opportunities for the local workforce. The hotel is also expected to create hundreds of permanent jobs once operational, contributing further to the area’s economic vitality.

As part of its sustainability goals, Balfour Beatty also plans to implement green building practices throughout the construction process, aligning with Miami Beach’s broader environmental objectives.

Once completed, the Grand Hyatt Miami Beach will not only redefine the convention district’s skyline but also symbolize a new era of integrated hospitality and community-focused development in South Florida.
