Bechtel to Build Key Phases of Mammoth Solar Project Powering 200,000 Homes

Bechtel has received Full Notice to Proceed (FNTP) from Doral Renewables to deliver three major phases of the Mammoth Solar project in northwest Indiana—one of the largest solar energy facilities in the United States. The three phases—Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I, and Mammoth Central II—will collectively contribute 900 megawattAC (MWAC) of solar capacity, part of the larger 1.3 gigawattAC Mammoth Solar development. Once operational, the project is expected to generate enough clean energy to power approximately 200,000 homes across the Midwest.
Located across multiple counties in Indiana, Mammoth Solar represents a significant step forward in the state’s and the nation’s push for reliable, clean, and locally produced renewable energy. The project is also projected to increase Indiana’s total solar capacity by more than 20%.

Construction activities ramped up earlier this month as Doral Renewables officially greenlit Bechtel to proceed with permanent works. While preliminary site preparations had already begun earlier this year, the FNTP allows Bechtel to initiate full-scale design, engineering, and construction, including the installation of solar modules, underground power infrastructure, and high-voltage substations.
Bechtel’s Role in Driving Clean Energy Growth
Bechtel, one of the world’s largest engineering and construction firms, will spearhead the entire delivery process—from engineering and procurement to construction, commissioning, and project management. The company will also deploy its award-winning digital delivery platform and autonomous technologies to enhance construction efficiency and streamline project timelines.
“Bechtel is proud to partner with Doral to deliver one of the nation’s largest solar projects,” said Scott Austin, Bechtel’s General Manager of Renewables & Clean Power. “A project of this scale depends on strong collaboration with local building trades to ensure access to the skilled workforce needed. We’re working closely with craft professionals, creating high-quality jobs, and being a reliable partner to the community as we help deliver Mammoth Solar and increase the supply of clean, reliable solar power.”
Over the next two years, the three phases will include the installation of approximately two million solar panels, with about one million of them manufactured in the United States. Bechtel’s commitment to supporting domestic supply chains reflects a growing emphasis in the renewable energy sector on U.S.-based sourcing and workforce development.
A Major Economic and Workforce Catalyst
At the height of construction, Mammoth Solar is expected to create more than 1,200 jobs, with at least 15% of them dedicated to apprenticeships. These roles will provide practical, hands-on training opportunities for emerging professionals and those entering the construction and renewable energy industries for the first time.
“Thanks to the meticulous planning and collaboration over the past several months, we are now poised to move confidently into construction,” said Amit Nadkarni, Senior Vice President of Project & Asset Management at Doral Renewables. “We remain deeply committed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental stewardship throughout this phase. We are equally focused on fostering strong community relationships, ensuring meaningful local participation from the workforce and vendors, and supporting the county through direct, indirect, and induced economic benefits.”
Agrivoltaics: Merging Energy and Agriculture
Mammoth Solar also serves as a model for agrivoltaics—a practice that co-locates energy generation and agricultural use. Once the project is fully operational in 2027, Doral Renewables plans to implement on-site livestock grazing and crop cultivation between and around the solar panels. This dual-use approach supports land conservation and local agriculture, allowing farmers to continue utilizing land productively while contributing to the nation’s clean energy transition.
About the Developers
