Maryland Leaders Back Contract Termination, Urge Swift Progress on Key Bridge Reconstruction
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Maryland’s congressional delegation is voicing support for the termination of a key contract tied to the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, while emphasizing the need to maintain momentum on the critical infrastructure project.

In a joint statement released April 28, Congressman Kweisi Mfume, alongside Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks, and several House members, addressed the decision to terminate the existing reconstruction contract and pursue a more cost-effective path forward.
“The Key Bridge was a gateway to the Port of Baltimore and a vital artery for commerce in the Mid-Atlantic. Its collapse impacted not only our region but our entire nation,” the lawmakers said.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge, spanning the Patapsco River, served as a major transportation link for freight and commuters in the region. Its loss has had far-reaching implications for supply chains, port operations and regional mobility.
Federal Support and Economic Importance
Lawmakers underscored the national significance of the reconstruction effort, pointing to the federal government’s commitment to fully fund the project.
“Replacing the Key Bridge is an economic imperative, which is why Federal Team Maryland fought to deliver a 100 percent federal cost match for the reconstruction – giving our state the certainty it needed to move forward,” the statement said.
The delegation emphasized that the bridge replacement is not just a regional priority but a project of national economic importance, given its role in supporting the Port of Baltimore and broader East Coast logistics networks.
With federal funding secured, officials said the focus must now remain on ensuring responsible use of taxpayer dollars while advancing construction efficiently.
Push for Cost Efficiency and Continued Work
The decision to terminate the contract reflects concerns over project costs and the need for better value. However, lawmakers stressed that early-stage work should continue uninterrupted.
“This is a critical infrastructure project requiring significant resources, and responsible stewardship of those resources is essential,” the delegation stated.
They added that progress on initial reconstruction phases will proceed while Maryland officials work to secure a more cost-effective contract.
“As a matter of national significance, it must move forward efficiently so we are encouraged that the early stages of reconstruction work will continue while the state seeks a more cost-effective contract,” the statement continued.
The delegation concluded by reaffirming its commitment to the project’s completion.
“We will continue to do all we can to support the construction of a stronger and safer bridge over the Patapsco.”
The termination and rebidding process marks a pivotal moment for the project, as state and federal leaders aim to balance fiscal responsibility with the urgency of restoring a key transportation corridor.
