F.H. Paschen and WJE Launch Workforce Development Program to Advance Concrete Engineering
A new workforce development initiative in Chicago is aiming to strengthen technical expertise across the construction industry, as F.H. Paschen and Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE) partner to deliver advanced training in concrete design and performance.
The companies recently hosted a full-day seminar titled “Built to Perform: A Modern Approach to Concrete Design, Construction, & Evaluation” at F.H. Paschen’s headquarters on April 9. The event brought together engineers, architects and construction professionals for a series of in-depth technical sessions focused on modern challenges in concrete engineering.
The program reflects a broader push within the industry to invest in workforce education as projects grow more complex and demand for specialized expertise increases.
Technical Training Focuses on Modern Construction Challenges
The seminar featured six presentations led by industry experts, covering a wide range of topics critical to today’s infrastructure and building projects. Sessions addressed strengthening existing structures, seismic-resistant construction techniques and the repair of post-tensioned concrete systems.
Additional topics included load testing of existing structures and construction standards for buildings, bridges, pavements and slabs on ground. The program was designed to provide practical insights that bridge the gap between theoretical engineering and real-world application.
Licensed professional engineers in Illinois were able to earn six Professional Development Hours (PDH) through participation, supporting ongoing certification and professional growth requirements.
“This collaboration with WJE allows us to bridge the gap between theoretical engineering and field execution, ensuring our teams remain at the absolute forefront of concrete innovation,” said Ashley Prosser, executive project manager at F.H. Paschen.
Industry Investment in Workforce Development
The seminar is part of “Paschen University,” an initiative developed by F.H. Paschen to provide continuous education opportunities for both internal teams and external industry professionals. The program is designed to enhance technical knowledge and promote best practices across the construction sector.
By convening experts from multiple disciplines, including materials science and structural engineering, the initiative aims to foster collaboration and elevate industry standards.
“At F.H. Paschen, we have always believed that our strongest asset is our collective knowledge,” said Chuck Freiheit, chief operating officer. “By hosting these continuing education classes, we are reinforcing our culture of excellence and ensuring that the next generation of builders is equipped with the modern tools and standards required to perform at the highest level.”
Industry leaders say programs like this are increasingly important as infrastructure demands evolve and projects require more advanced materials, methods and compliance standards.
The focus on continuing education also aligns with broader workforce development trends, as companies seek to address skills gaps and prepare workers for emerging challenges in construction and engineering.
