Skilled-trades competitions provide apprentices with an opportunity to demonstrate practical abilities under timed conditions while giving contractors a way to recognize developing craft talent. ABC San Diego will hold its 2026 Local Craft Championships on Nov. 7 at its training facility in Poway, California.
The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 13825 Kirkham Way. Attendance is open to the public, including family and friends of participants, without an admission charge.
The Local Craft Championships will test hands-on skills in electrical, plumbing, pipefitting and sheet metal. Participants will complete practical tasks in a timed competition designed around their respective trades.
Apprentices and trainees in their third or fourth year of training are eligible to compete after achieving a qualifying score on the event's written examination. The exam is scheduled to be administered in September, after which ABC San Diego will notify participants who qualify for the hands-on competition.
The format provides an additional performance benchmark for workers progressing through apprenticeship and training programs.
The local competition will include awards and cash prizes for winners. Participants can also use their results as a professional credential and demonstration of trade skills.
First-place competitors in the qualifying trades will advance to the National Craft Championships in March 2027, where they will compete against apprentices from across the country.
ABC San Diego's 2025 competition recognized winners in plumbing, electrical, sheet metal and pipefitting. The organization continues to use the annual event as part of its broader apprenticeship and construction education activities.
Craft competitions give construction employers and workforce organizations a structured way to recognize practical skills among apprentices and trainees. For contractors, events such as the Local Craft Championships also provide visibility into the capabilities being developed through formal trade training programs.
The 2026 event will bring together developing craft professionals across four core construction trades while connecting local competition with a national skills championship.
