
Expanding aviation capacity has become a priority for major transportation markets facing growing passenger demand and limited room for existing facilities to expand. AECOM has been selected to support the early design phase of Portugal’s planned New Lisbon Airport, a project intended to create a new international gateway for the country’s capital region.
AECOM will provide preliminary design services for Luis de Camões Airport after being selected by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal S.A., part of VINCI Airports. The scope includes technical design and project management support during the initial development phase.
The project team will include AECOM’s global aviation specialists along with local Portuguese partners to advance design planning for the future airport facility.
New Lisbon Airport is planned to replace Humberto Delgado Airport, Lisbon’s current primary airport, which has limited opportunities for additional expansion. The proposed site is located in the municipalities of Benavente and Montijo, across the Tagus River from Lisbon.
The planned airport is being designed with long-term operational needs in mind, including passenger capacity, efficient airport operations and the ability to accommodate future expansion with minimal disruption.
AECOM’s responsibilities during the preliminary design phase will focus on establishing the technical framework for the airport’s development and supporting project planning decisions.
Airport modernization and expansion projects remain a significant area of investment as regions upgrade transportation infrastructure to support economic activity, tourism and international connectivity.
