AECOM Selected to Design First Section of New Zealand’s Northland Corridor

Warkworth to Te Hana Project

Large transportation programs increasingly require coordinated design and construction strategies that address safety, resilience and material efficiency alongside roadway capacity. AECOM has been selected as design partner for the Warkworth to Te Hana project, the first section of New Zealand’s broader Northland Corridor Program.

The project will upgrade the existing State Highway 1 between Warkworth and Te Hana into a higher-standard motorway. It forms Section One of a planned 100-kilometer corridor intended to connect Auckland with Whangārei.

ACCIONA is the lead contractor, working with Aberdeen Investments as part of the Northway Consortium. AECOM will provide design services for the project in coordination with the delivery team and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Safety and Resilience Measures

AECOM’s design includes a new system interchange and changes to the roadway alignment intended to improve curves and sight distances. The design also incorporates safer gradients for road users.

Resilience measures are intended to reduce the effects of flooding, landslides and other extreme weather events on the corridor. The upgraded roadway is expected to improve movement for passenger vehicles, freight and public transportation while addressing congestion along the route.

The corridor is part of a broader transportation investment connecting communities in Northland with Auckland, New Zealand’s largest economic center.

Material Reuse and Construction Efficiency

The design approach includes reuse of materials available at the project site. This is intended to reduce reliance on imported materials and limit construction waste.

Using on-site materials can also reduce hauling requirements and associated embodied carbon while potentially improving material-related project costs. For contractors and project owners, material management is an important consideration on large transportation projects where earthworks, hauling and imported construction materials can represent significant components of project activity.
