AES Completes First Phase of Major Solar-Storage Project with Amazon

ARLINGTON, Va., June 11, 2025 — The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), a global leader in renewable energy solutions, has successfully completed the first 1,000 megawatts (MW) of its landmark Bellefield project, a two-phase solar-plus-storage development in Kern County, California. Developed under a 15-year agreement with Amazon, this milestone marks a major step toward establishing the largest solar-plus-storage facility in the United States.

The Bellefield 1 phase includes 500 MW of solar power generation and 500 MW of four-hour battery energy storage, representing half of the project’s total planned capacity. Upon full completion in 2026, the Bellefield project will deliver 2,000 MW of renewable power—enough to supply the annual electricity needs of approximately 467,000 homes—while displacing more than 1 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

“Completing the first 1,000 MW of Bellefield demonstrates how rapidly solar and storage can be deployed to meet the growing energy demand of data centers,” said Andrés Gluski, AES President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our best-in-class track record of delivering renewables projects on time and on budget is deeply valued by our customers and is one of our key competitive advantages.”

AES has been recognized as a top global provider of clean energy to corporations, particularly in the technology and hyperscale sectors. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), the company has secured 10.1 GW in long-term clean energy contracts with major hyperscalers, including the full 2 GW Bellefield initiative.

To optimize construction efficiency and improve on-site safety, AES deployed its proprietary AI-assisted robotic system, Maximo, which supported crews during solar module installation. The system significantly enhanced construction speed and accuracy, reflecting AES' ongoing commitment to innovation in clean energy deployment.

The Bellefield 1 phase created over 700 union jobs, supporting the local economy and skilled trades workforce in Kern County. An additional 1,000 union jobs are expected to be created at the peak of Bellefield 2 construction, with completion targeted for 2026.

The company anticipates recognizing substantial earnings tied to Bellefield 1 entering commercial operation in the second half of 2025. Construction on the second phase remains on schedule.
