Amazon to Invest $10B in NC for AI and Cloud Expansion

Caroline Raffetto

Amazon has announced a sweeping $10 billion investment in North Carolina aimed at expanding its cloud computing and AI infrastructure. The development—centered in Richmond County—will add at least 500 high-skilled tech jobs while supporting thousands more through the Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center supply chain. The company is also launching workforce training and community support initiatives throughout the state.

The move builds on Amazon’s significant presence in North Carolina, where it has already invested $12 billion since 2010. This previous investment has contributed $13.1 billion to the state’s GDP and supported more than 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work and innovate, and I am pleased that North Carolina will stay at the forefront of all that’s ahead as we continue to attract top technology companies like Amazon,” said Governor Josh Stein. “Amazon’s investment is among the largest in state history and will bring hundreds of good-paying jobs and an economic boost to Richmond County.”

As Amazon responds to the rising global demand for generative AI and cloud computing capabilities, the Richmond County investment includes construction of data centers equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure. These facilities will host new roles such as data center engineers, network specialists, and security professionals.

“Amazon's $10 billion investment in North Carolina underscores our commitment to driving innovation and advancing the future of cloud computing and AI technologies,” said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer. “This investment will position North Carolina as a hub for cutting-edge technology, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs, and drive significant economic growth.”

Amazon is also dedicating resources to build out training and education programs. Through partnerships with local colleges and workforce organizations, the company will offer programs like fiber optic splicing workshops, data center technician training, and STEM experiences for students from elementary through high school.

“For us, it’s about ensuring communities have the opportunity to grow with us,” Zapolsky added. “We’re committed to empowering local talent and ensuring that North Carolina’s workforce is ready for the digital future.”

As part of the initiative, Amazon is launching the Amazon Richmond County Community Fund, committing $150,000 in grants of up to $10,000 for community projects. The fund will support STEM education, sustainability, economic development, and health and well-being initiatives. The application window runs through July 23, 2025.

“We’re proud to expand our operations in North Carolina to help drive the next generation of cutting-edge technologies such as AI,” Amazon stated. “We’re grateful for the state and local leaders who have partnered with us, and we look forward to keeping North Carolina at the leading edge of the digital age.”
