Astound, a leading provider of internet, Wi-Fi, mobile and fiber-optic services, has officially completed construction of Newport, Oregon’s first full-scale fiber network, marking a major milestone for digital connectivity along the Oregon Coast.

The company invested $4.6 million to build approximately 55 miles of new fiber infrastructure, extending high-speed access to over 5,000 residential homes and 900 commercial locations. Key community institutions — including government buildings, schools, fire stations, libraries and healthcare clinics — are also connected to the network.

Astound additionally upgraded more than 300 homes in the South Beach area, replacing older hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) systems with full fiber. The network was deployed using both above- and below-ground construction techniques, designed for long-term durability.

High-Speed Connectivity Arrives for Residents and Remote Workers

With the launch of the new fiber system, Newport households now have access to symmetrical speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second, enabling faster uploads and downloads, low-latency gaming, 4K streaming, and seamless multi-device connectivity. Unlike traditional cable-based infrastructure, fiber networks maintain speed and stability even during peak usage and adverse conditions.

Astound emphasized the network’s resilience in coastal weather, noting it can remain operational during power outages if residents have backup power.

“The Newport community deserves access to the same levels of reliable high-speed connectivity and fiber optic infrastructure that more urban areas have come to expect,” said Jared Sonne, senior vice president and general manager for Astound’s West Region. “We believe that the area’s residents and businesses alike will see immediate benefits from the vital connectivity that Astound’s robust fiber network infrastructure delivers.”

Astound officials say the new infrastructure opens the door for expanded commercial services, remote operations and cloud-based collaboration.

“As of today, businesses of all size in Newport can benefit from the powerful and reliable connectivity a fiber optic network is uniquely equipped to deliver,” said Patrick Knorr, Chief Commercial Officer for Astound Business Solutions. “Business needs are evolving at an unprecedented rate and Astound’s network is future-ready, able to address today’s speed and capacity demands, as well as tomorrow’s opportunities.”

Astound — which entered the Newport market in 2016 through its acquisition of CoastCom — will maintain and operate the fiber communications network moving forward.
