Beatrice Landfill Construction Ahead of Schedule Due to Ideal Weather

The new Beatrice Area Solid Waste Agency Landfill project, which is located southwest of Beatrice, has experienced remarkable progress, with construction far exceeding initial expectations. This success has been largely due to nearly perfect weather conditions that have allowed construction crews to work efficiently without delays.

Jason Moore, the administrator of the landfill, highlighted the positive impact of dry weather, especially for the excavation and compaction processes. “We have got ideal clay for construction at the landfill onsite, so it doesn't have to be hauled in,” Moore explained, noting that the moisture levels of the clay are perfect for the required compaction. Originally, construction officials anticipated a month-long period to achieve the necessary compaction for the clay, but with the current weather, that timeline has been shortened significantly.

“The project is moving faster than expected, which is great,” Moore continued. “Everything is well ahead of schedule. We’ve already completed our stormwater pond, and cell one is nearly finished, if it’s not already done. We’ve even started putting black soil back over the clay in several areas. Our leachate pond has also been roughed in and is on track.”

Pruss Excavation, based in Dodge, Nebraska, is handling the site work for the landfill construction. As part of the project, crews have been working on a variety of crucial components, such as drainage systems, landfill cells, and containment ponds, which are essential for proper waste management and environmental safety.

In addition to the site work, the landfill project has received positive feedback from local officials and residents, who are looking forward to the benefits the new facility will bring. The landfill will increase the capacity for waste disposal in the region, address long-term waste management needs, and replace the current facility, which has limited capacity and is approaching its operational lifespan.

The new landfill, located just south of the existing Beatrice facility, is scheduled to open by late summer or early fall of 2025. With the project moving ahead of schedule, local officials are optimistic that the opening will bring a much-needed solution to waste management in the Beatrice area and surrounding communities.
