Bechtel Takes Control of Poland Nuclear Plant Site as Earthworks Begin

Poland’s first nuclear power plant has moved into a major site preparation phase, with Bechtel assuming responsibility for managing the construction site and initial earthworks beginning in Choczewo. The transition moves the project from planning and design activities toward physical site development and construction.

Earthworks Launch at 300-Hectare Site

The initial construction program will prepare the site for subsequent plant development. Work will include grading and leveling, improvements to drainage systems and construction of approximately 16 kilometers of temporary roads.

Additional site infrastructure will support construction operations, including offices, logistics facilities, warehouses, equipment maintenance areas and other temporary facilities.

Bechtel will manage construction activities, coordinate contractors and oversee ongoing site work and safety as development progresses.

Polish Contractors Join Site Preparation

Budimex will carry out the initial site preparation activities, adding a major Polish construction company to the project's delivery network.

The project has also expanded procurement activity with Polish businesses. Bechtel has signed contracts with companies including DORACO and Unihouse, while additional procurement processes remain underway.

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe has awarded contracts to approximately 475 Polish businesses since 2020, including companies located in the Pomerania region.

Local Workforce Capacity Expands

Bechtel is supporting project delivery through its newly established office in Gdańsk. The office is expected to employ about 200 people as the nuclear project advances, with most positions expected to be filled locally.

More than 400 people are currently working on the project, including approximately one-third recruited in Poland. Workforce levels are expected to increase as site activity expands.

The facility is being developed as Poland’s first AP1000 nuclear power plant, with Bechtel supporting engineering, construction and project delivery activities.
