BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) — Southern Vermont is gearing up for a new recreational hotspot as construction on Bennington’s skate park nears completion. The nearly $1 million project is on track to officially open September 19, weather permitting, and is expected to become one of the largest skate parks in Vermont.
The project has been years in the making, fueled by grassroots fundraising, municipal support, and federal aid. Roughly $300,000 came from local fundraising efforts, with another $300,000 provided by the town and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The remainder of the funding was secured through grants and additional contributions, reflecting the community’s strong commitment to the project.
Strategically located alongside Bennington’s network of bike paths, the skate park is also within walking distance of downtown businesses and nearby schools, making it easily accessible to both residents and visitors.
Community leaders say the project represents far more than just a recreational upgrade. They see it as a catalyst for local economic activity and a way to position Bennington as a destination.
“Just through the last couple of weeks excitement builds and that’s really what we hope for, I think this is going to be not only a great place for community recreation but really a destination for a reason to come to Bennington a reason while you’re here get a bite to eat, you know go shopping downtown, maybe stay overnight that’s what we want,” said Shannon Barsotti, Bennington Community Development Director.
The skate park is designed to serve a wide range of users, from beginners to advanced skaters, and will complement other outdoor amenities in the region. Town officials anticipate that its opening will draw not only local youth but also visitors from across Vermont and neighboring states.
By linking recreation with community growth, Bennington leaders hope the project will strengthen the town’s appeal, bringing in new energy and supporting small businesses in the area.
With just weeks to go before opening day, anticipation is running high. If all goes as planned, skaters will have a brand-new place to roll by mid-September—marking a major milestone for Bennington’s vision of blending recreation, community, and economic vitality.
