Berglund Construction Expands Community Projects in Northwest Indiana

As construction season gains momentum across Northwest Indiana, Berglund Construction is spearheading a wave of transformative development that promises to enhance the region’s communities in 2025 and beyond.

From Gary to Chesterton and Hammond to Westville, Berglund has kicked off an ambitious slate of new construction and restoration projects that reflect a deep commitment to community wellness, revitalization, and educational support.

“We have a lot of exciting projects going on right now in Northwest Indiana,” said Josh Schoon, Project Executive at Berglund Construction, highlighting the company’s busy start to the year.

Among the firm’s flagship community efforts is the Tolleston Opportunity Campus in Gary. A long-anticipated community priority, this project broke ground on April 23, 2025, and is poised to revitalize the existing Boys & Girls Club while adding an expansive 80,000-square-foot facility to house a YMCA and a Methodist Hospitals partnership.

Another major redevelopment is underway in Chesterton, where the old Chesterton Middle School is being transformed into the Duneland Family YMCA’s Healthy Living Campus.

“Both projects will help improve the community from a health and fitness standpoint with new opportunities for families to grow,” Schoon said.

The construction firm is also breathing new life into historic architecture. In downtown Hammond, Berglund is restoring the grand hall of the century-old former Bank Calumet headquarters, converting it into The Reserve—a vibrant coworking and event space for residents of the newly converted apartment building.

“The great part about these projects is that we’re taking buildings that have been around forever and giving them new life and purpose,” Schoon noted. “We are currently restoring the 1st level grand hall… This project includes the restoration of the 38-foot vaulted plaster ceilings, new exterior curtainwall windows and decorative painting to highlight the aesthetic history and beauty that this building once had.”

Further north, Berglund is partnering with Purdue University Northwest on a new student residence hall, currently in the early stages of sitework following detailed pre-construction planning that began earlier this year.

“There are a lot of projects that have some build up, and that’s when we get on board,” Schoon explained. “It certainly takes time and effort to lead up in the process once we’re selected as the construction builder for a project.”

That time investment is evident in Berglund’s work with Shirley Heinze Land Trust at Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve, where trails, a pavilion, and improved pedestrian access will soon provide better community connectivity to natural areas.

Looking ahead, Schoon shared updates on a confidential project that’s been in the planning phase for two years and is now nearing groundbreaking for early 2026.

“I’m super excited about the Tolleston Opportunity Campus project,” he added. “That project is going to mean so much to the Gary community and the residents. It’s taken a lot of effort, thought, and planning to get the project going.”

Berglund Construction continues to build not only infrastructure, but also relationships and regional impact—one project at a time.

“It’s an exciting time for us, and we’re looking forward to it,” Schoon said.
