FENNER, Calif. – BNSF Railway has successfully completed the replacement of a 350-foot-long, double-track concrete beam bridge with new steel beams and track panels on its Southern Transcon route in Fenner, California. The bridge replacement is a crucial upgrade to the company’s extensive rail infrastructure.

Strategic Work with Minimal Disruption

The intensive work took place in 60-hour windows over two weekends, allowing BNSF to maintain operational efficiency while carrying out the necessary upgrades. The project was carefully planned to minimize disruption, with the bridge being replaced in two phases, one track at a time. This approach ensured that 150 trains could continue running on the other track without any significant delays, keeping the freight operations smoothly running.

Challenging Location, Successful Outcome

Despite the remote location of the bridge in Fenner, California, BNSF managed to complete the complex project ahead of schedule. BNSF’s Director of Bridge Construction, Mike Herzog, acknowledged the difficulties faced in the project but emphasized the long-term benefits:
“The work was challenging given the remote location, but now that it’s completed, this new bridge will help keep our intermodal trains moving for generations to come. Shout out to all the crews, BNSF’s project manager Tim Fanning, and contractor Kraemer North America for helping to keep the U.S. supply chain moving!”

The completed bridge will be instrumental in supporting intermodal transportation, facilitating the movement of goods across the U.S. and strengthening the nation’s supply chain.

Ahead of Schedule and Ready for Future Growth

BNSF successfully completed the bridge work ahead of schedule, showcasing the company’s commitment to improving its infrastructure and operational efficiency. This significant project contributes to the continued growth and reliability of BNSF’s extensive rail network, a vital component in the nation’s transportation and logistics industries.

Ongoing Investment in Infrastructure

As part of its ongoing efforts to modernize and maintain its infrastructure, BNSF continues to invest in upgrades and maintenance to ensure its rail lines can accommodate the increasing demand for freight transportation. The Southern Transcon, one of the most important rail corridors in the country, plays a critical role in the movement of goods across the western U.S.

Looking Ahead

With this successful project behind them, BNSF is focusing on further enhancements to ensure that its rail network remains efficient, reliable, and future-ready. The completion of this bridge replacement is a clear demonstration of BNSF's commitment to keeping the U.S. supply chain moving forward smoothly and without interruption.
