Boise Stadium Hits Major Turf Milestone

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Athletic Club Boise’s future home at Expo Idaho has crossed one of its most visible and meaningful milestones yet, as installation of the stadium’s professional-grade turf officially got underway over the weekend.

The project, which is transforming the former horse racing track into a modern soccer venue, has moved steadily through structural and infrastructure phases. Now, the field itself is taking shape — a moment that signals the stadium is entering its final stretch of major construction activity.

Crews began rolling out the FIFA-certified FieldTurf system, which is considered the highest-rated turf product available in the United States. The installation process is far more complex than simply laying down green synthetic grass. Beneath the turf lies a sophisticated 20 mm shock-absorption underlayment designed to reduce player impact, improve safety, and enhance overall performance.

In addition to its cushioning layer, the new turf system includes embedded sensors at key locations across the pitch. These sensors track temperature, surface performance, compaction, and other real-time data points that help grounds crews maintain optimal playing conditions year-round. This data-driven approach mirrors what many MLS and international clubs have adopted to improve consistency and athlete safety.

This turf milestone follows months of steady progress on other major stadium components. Crews have upgraded grandstand seating, added supporter-section infrastructure, and installed club-level seating amenities — moving the project from early groundwork to recognizable game-day form. For fans eager to see professional soccer take root in Boise, the lush green field represents more than aesthetics; it’s a tangible sign that opening day is drawing closer.

Co-owner Brad Stith emphasized the emotional significance of this moment, noting how the community has played a vital role in pushing the project forward. “The last few months have brought several visible milestones at the Athletic Club Boise Stadium at Expo Idaho—from improvements to the grandstand seating to installation of the supporter section and club seat infrastructure. But seeing the pitch go green with the highest-rated turf in the U.S. is a monumental moment. With each step, we’re so grateful for our partners and our Treasure Valley community. We can’t wait to gather here for matches and events together on this pitch," says Co-Owner Brad Stith.

The transformation of Expo Idaho into a professional soccer venue is also expected to bring broader economic and community benefits. Local businesses anticipate increased activity on match days, and the club has been in discussions with youth soccer organizations about potential partnerships, training opportunities, and community events at the facility.

As the turf installation progresses, additional phases will include finalizing field drainage systems, finishing locker room and player tunnel features, completing press and broadcast areas, and installing remaining concessions and hospitality spaces. Club officials say they remain on track to wrap up major construction before the inaugural season.

For Treasure Valley residents and soccer supporters, the green field is more than a construction milestone — it’s a preview of the long-awaited arrival of professional soccer in Boise, and a sign that the stadium is rapidly moving from concept to reality.
