Empire State Development has announced the start of a $2.3 million revitalization project at Sears-Paderewski Park in Buffalo’s Broadway-Fillmore neighbourhood, bringing new recreational amenities and environmental improvements to the city’s East Side.

The project will transform three city-owned parcels, including a paved lot and two adjacent vacant properties, into a community space designed for recreation, neighbourhood gatherings and outdoor activities. New York State committed $1.2 million in direct assistance to support the improvements.

New Playground and Pavilion Planned

The revitalization includes a new playground with a rubber safety surface, a modern stage pavilion and improved green space. The development is intended to provide children and families with accessible recreational facilities while creating a gathering place for neighbourhood events and community activities.

Construction began in late September 2026, and installation of the playground equipment is underway. That work is expected to be completed later this fall, while the remaining improvements are scheduled for completion in spring 2027.

Green Infrastructure and Project Funding

Environmental improvements form a key part of the project. Planned features include tree plantings and green infrastructure designed to absorb stormwater, reduce runoff and filter urban pollutants. These measures will help convert previously paved and vacant land into more functional green space.

The $1.2 million in state support comprises $630,000 through the Department of State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative and $600,000 from Empire State Development, as outlined in the project announcement.

Additional funding includes $416,400 from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, $375,000 from Erie County, $230,000 from NewCity Parks and $50,000 from the Buffalo Sewer Authority.

The City of Buffalo’s Department of Parks and Recreation partnered with NewCity Parks to secure funding for the improvements.

Community Stewardship and Long-Term Impact

The city plans to work with local block clubs and community organisations through its Adopt-a-Park programme to support long-term maintenance. Residents will have opportunities to help care for the community garden and ornamental flower beds.

The redevelopment responds to neighbourhood requests for additional green space, trees and recreational opportunities. By replacing underutilised parcels with a landscaped public park, the project is intended to improve access to outdoor amenities and strengthen community connections in Broadway-Fillmore.

The investment also supports Buffalo’s broader neighbourhood revitalisation efforts by combining recreational infrastructure with environmental improvements and community participation.
