Young women across the Great Lakes Bay Region will once again have the chance to delve into career opportunities in the construction industry at this year's Build Like a Girl event. Organized by Associated Builders & Contractors Greater Michigan (ABC Greater Michigan), Greater Michigan Construction Academy (GMCA), and Ladies Operating for Growth in Construction (LOGIC), the annual gathering will take place on Feb. 19 at The Great Hall in Midland.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Builders

This initiative is designed to introduce girls in grades 5-12 to the vast career possibilities in the construction industry. By engaging in interactive experiences and receiving guidance from successful women in the field, attendees will gain a better understanding of potential career paths.

“Build Like a Girl strives to empower and educate young girls by providing opportunities to explore the construction industry through interactive experiences and guidance from successful women in the field," said Cathy Geiger, director of marketing and community affairs at ABC Greater Michigan.

Hands-On Experiences with Industry Leaders

A key feature of the event is its hands-on approach, offering interactive booths hosted by local employers and industry professionals. These booths, operated by contractors and suppliers, will provide real-world insights into construction-related trades. Participation is free, though companies must be affiliated with the construction industry and present a hands-on activity for attendees.

“The hands-on activities at the company booths help inspire confidence, showing girls they are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to,” Geiger added.

Encouraging STEM Careers and Workforce Development

The event aims to educate participants on rewarding STEM careers within the construction industry. Attendees will gain insight into educational requirements, skills development, and overcoming challenges in a male-dominated field. A panel discussion featuring women in construction will further provide valuable firsthand experiences and career advice.

What to Expect

In addition to hands-on experiences, participants will receive a t-shirt, trucker hat, event bag, and swag from various company booths.
