
Modern transit facilities are increasingly being designed to accommodate changing transportation technologies while improving passenger access and connections. The completed Murfreesboro Transit Center provides a centralized public transportation hub while incorporating infrastructure intended to support future electric vehicle use.
Bulley & Andrews completed the $17.3 million transit center on a 5.74-acre site in Murfreesboro. The development includes a 16,000-square-foot facility, three buildings, six bus canopies and related site infrastructure.
Construction was delivered over 21 months. The work required coordination with a nearby Tennessee Department of Transportation project involving improvements to New Salem Highway. Maintaining public access and coordinating construction activities were important elements of the delivery process.
The building system incorporates hollowcore planks, cast-in-place concrete, concrete masonry unit walls and structural steel. These materials were used across the facility and supporting structures to provide the required durability for a public transportation environment.
The project includes infrastructure intended to support the future electrification of public transportation. Conduits and charging systems were incorporated to accommodate electric buses and passenger vehicles as transportation requirements evolve.
The centralized facility is designed to improve bus transfers and accessibility while providing a dedicated location for transit operations. Since opening, the center has become a key component of Murfreesboro’s public transportation network.
The Murfreesboro Transit Center received the 2025 Transit Development of the Year Award from the Transit Alliance of Middle Tennessee.
For public-sector owners and contractors, the project illustrates the construction considerations involved in delivering transportation facilities alongside active roadway improvements. Incorporating charging infrastructure during initial construction can also reduce the need for future modifications as transit fleets adopt electric vehicles.
The project demonstrates how transit investments can combine immediate mobility improvements with infrastructure designed to accommodate future transportation technologies.
