Faculty Center Adds Physician Support Space

Healthcare facilities are increasingly using renovations and targeted expansions to improve staff environments while preserving space for patient services. At Northwestern Medicine’s Galter Pavilion in Chicago, Bulley & Andrews completed an 18,500-square-foot Faculty Center designed to provide physicians with dedicated work, wellness and collaboration areas.

The new center includes reservable offices, sleep rooms, wellness rooms, meeting spaces, a locker room with showers and a social area with a café. The project allows additional space within Galter Pavilion to be allocated toward patient care while providing physicians with amenities outside traditional office settings.

Preconstruction and Phasing Supported Active Hospital Operations

Bulley & Andrews began supporting Northwestern Medicine during the preconstruction phase, providing nine months of planning services. The work included design coordination, budgeting, scheduling and procurement planning.

Early purchasing of long-lead materials helped maintain the construction schedule as design development and building information modeling coordination continued. Demolition activities were also sequenced to support the renovation schedule.

The project presented additional logistical challenges because construction occurred within a fully occupied healthcare facility that remained operational around the clock. Limited ceiling space required careful coordination while new building utilities were installed.

Construction activities were phased to minimize impacts on patient care, hospital staff and building occupants. Coordination among facility personnel, project teams and end users helped maintain operations while work progressed.

Renovation Supports Northwestern Medicine’s Capacity Goals

The completed Faculty Center provides Northwestern Medicine physicians with dedicated areas for work, rest, meetings and wellness. Its placement within the existing Galter Pavilion also supports the broader objective of increasing available space for patient services.

Why It Matters

Renovating active healthcare facilities requires construction teams to balance schedule, utility installation, access and safety with uninterrupted clinical operations. The Galter Pavilion project demonstrates how extensive preconstruction planning, phased construction and early material procurement can help manage those constraints while modernizing occupied medical facilities.
