The construction effort affects portions of I-80 running through Contra Costa County, Solano County, and Alameda County. Work began on February 23, 2026, and transportation officials say the installation activities will continue during overnight hours to reduce traffic disruptions for commuters.

The fiber optic project is expected to improve communications infrastructure along the highway corridor and support transportation operations across the region.

Overnight Lane Closures Planned Through March

Construction crews are working Sunday through Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to Caltrans officials. During this time, drivers may encounter rolling lane and ramp closures in both directions along the highway.

Initial work will focus on a section of the freeway between the interchange connecting Interstate 980 and Interstate 580, extending toward the I-580/I-80 connector.

Lane restrictions will take place between the city of Emeryville and the Carquinez Bridge. Transportation officials said motorists should expect temporary ramp closures and minor delays while construction crews perform installation work along the corridor.

Electronic changeable message signs will be posted throughout the project area to alert drivers about closures and traffic conditions.

Project Aims to Strengthen Highway Communications Network

The fiber optic infrastructure project is designed to expand communication systems that support traffic management, safety operations, and transportation technology along the busy I-80 corridor.

Transportation officials say the installation work is tentatively scheduled for completion by winter 2028, though timelines may shift depending on weather conditions and construction progress.

Motorists traveling through the area are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and drive cautiously through construction zones.

Drivers can also access real-time highway conditions through services such as 511.org and the Caltrans QuickMap traffic monitoring system, which provide updates on lane closures, incidents, and road conditions across California.
