The meetings will give residents and stakeholders in Los Angeles County an opportunity to learn about upcoming construction activities, timelines, and expected impacts, including traffic disruptions and bridge closures.

Public Meetings to Share Project Timeline and Impacts

Caltrans has scheduled three sessions—two in-person and one virtual—to ensure broad community participation. The events will include presentations from project officials, followed by a question-and-answer session to address public concerns.

The open houses are scheduled as follows:

  • March 18 (5:30–7:45 p.m.) – San Pedro Regional Branch Library, San Pedro
  • March 19 (6–8 p.m.) – Wilmington Recreation Center, Wilmington
  • April 2 (6–8 p.m.) – Virtual meeting via Webex

Officials noted that recordings of the sessions will be made available online for those unable to attend.

Construction Set to Begin on Major Bridge Upgrade

The project will focus on replacing the aging deck of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, a key transportation link serving the Los Angeles Harbor area.

Preliminary construction work is scheduled to begin on March 23 and continue throughout 2026, with work extending into subsequent phases over the next two years.

Due to the scale of the upgrade, the project will require both partial and full closures of the bridge at various stages, potentially impacting commuters, freight movement, and local businesses.

The project is being delivered by the Skanska-CEC Joint Venture, which will oversee construction activities and coordination.

Why the Project Is Critical

The Vincent Thomas Bridge is a vital connector for:

  • Port operations at Los Angeles Harbor
  • Regional freight and logistics movement
  • Daily commuter traffic between communities

Replacing the bridge deck is essential to maintaining long-term structural integrity, improving safety, and supporting increased transportation demand.

Impact on Local Communities

Residents and businesses in San Pedro and Wilmington can expect:

  • Temporary traffic delays and detours
  • Increased construction activity and noise
  • Changes in commuting patterns during closures

The open houses are designed to help the public better understand these impacts and prepare accordingly.

Opportunities for Public Engagement

Caltrans emphasized the importance of community feedback during the early stages of construction. These meetings allow:

  • Direct interaction with project engineers and planners
  • Clarification on construction schedules and mitigation measures
  • Input from residents that may influence project execution
