Catalyst Construction Marks 20-Year Partnership Supporting Lighthouse Youth Center

Construction Owners Editorial Team

Catalyst Construction is reflecting on its two-decade partnership with Lighthouse Youth Center, highlighting how construction partnerships can help nonprofits create safe, supportive spaces for young people.

Lighthouse Youth Center in Milwaukee is marking its 20th anniversary after growing from a small after-school ministry into an organization serving communities across Milwaukee and Appleton.

The organization was launched in 2006 after community leaders identified a need for a safe place for children of working families during after-school hours. Rather than developing a program without community input, Lighthouse built its approach around conversations with local families and young people.

Highlights

  • 20 years of service: Lighthouse Youth Center launched in Milwaukee in 2006 and is celebrating two decades of community impact.
  • Five locations: The organization now serves communities across Milwaukee and Appleton.
  • Youth-focused spaces: Lighthouse provides safe after-school environments, mentoring and relationships for young people.
  • Catalyst partnership: Catalyst Construction has supported Lighthouse's facility needs and worked with the nonprofit to make the most of limited resources.
  • Community investment: Catalyst's involvement has extended beyond construction to helping the organization address challenges creatively and connect with resources.
  • Workforce development: More than 40 pastors have come through Lighthouse's mentorship program with Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.

Building Spaces That Support Community Programs

As Lighthouse expanded, its leaders recognized that facilities played an important role in creating environments where young people could feel safe and welcomed.

That led to a longstanding relationship with Catalyst Construction founder and CEO Matt Burow. According to Lighthouse Executive Director Pastor Jim Buske, Catalyst approached the organization's facilities as tools supporting its broader mission rather than simply as construction projects.

The partnership has included helping Lighthouse navigate construction challenges, identify solutions and make responsible use of nonprofit resources.

Investing in the Next Generation

Lighthouse also developed a mentorship partnership with Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, bringing seminary students into its programs as part-time mentors.

The initiative gave future pastors an opportunity to work directly with young people and gain experience serving communities outside traditional church settings. More than 40 pastors have participated in the program, with many going on to serve mission congregations around the country.

Today, Lighthouse is supported by staff, volunteers, donors and community partners while continuing to provide youth with safe spaces and mentoring relationships.

Why It Matters

For nonprofit organizations, a building is more than bricks, walls and classrooms—it can become the foundation for long-term community services. Catalyst's relationship with Lighthouse demonstrates how construction companies can contribute beyond project delivery by helping mission-driven organizations stretch limited resources and create spaces that support their goals.

The partnership also highlights the broader role of construction in community development: when contractors, nonprofits and community stakeholders work together, facilities can become lasting assets that support youth, families and future generations.
