Construction Owners Editorial Team

CHITTENDEN COUNTY, Vt. — Several major infrastructure and resurfacing projects are reshaping roads across Chittenden County this week, with local and state officials urging motorists to plan ahead for lane closures, detours, and extended travel times. The updates, released by regional transportation officials, highlight multiple ongoing construction projects expected to stretch through 2026 and 2027.

South Burlington & Hinesburg

In South Burlington and Hinesburg, a resurfacing project on Vermont Route 116 continues to cause one-lane alternating traffic. Flaggers are managing the flow of vehicles throughout the construction zone, and drivers are encouraged to use caution. The resurfacing work is expected to wrap up by mid-October, according to transportation officials.

Meanwhile, in South Burlington, work continues on a new water line and shared-use path along Garden Street between Dorset and Market Streets. The project has temporarily reduced traffic to one-way flow, allowing vehicles to enter from Dorset Street but exit only via Market Street. Construction crews expect to complete this infrastructure improvement by November 14.

Colchester

Two large-scale projects in Colchester continue to affect traffic patterns near the busy interstate corridors.

The Exit 17 interchange project, which spans portions of U.S. Route 7 and U.S. Route 2, will cause periodic lane closures and alternating one-way traffic from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Friday. Additional lane shifts will occur between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays, affecting the area between the Shell gas station and Wiley Road, and east of Jasper Mine Road to the Chimney Corner intersection.

Construction on the Exit 17 project is slated for completion by summer 2026.

Farther south, the Exit 16 diverging diamond interchange (DDI) project continues to reshape one of the region’s busiest intersections. The DDI construction will require lane closures, traffic shifts, and short stoppages along U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive, as well as on intersecting side streets.

Officials caution that motorists should expect significant delays during peak travel hours and plan alternate routes where possible. The Exit 16 DDI is anticipated to be complete by summer 2027 and is expected to improve traffic flow and safety once operational.

Essex Junction

In Essex Junction, the Iroquois Avenue waterline and roadway replacement project has temporarily closed Iroquois Avenue between South Summit and Park Streets, as well as portions of Algonquin Avenue north and south of Iroquois.

Local traffic is being detoured via Abnaki and Cherokee Avenues, and officials expect construction to wrap up by the end of October. The work is part of a broader infrastructure improvement plan to modernize utilities and improve roadway conditions across the village.

Williston

In Williston, a roadway widening and resurfacing project is underway on Mountain View Road, requiring lane reductions and alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. The affected stretch runs between Vermont Route 2A and just east of Marions Way.

Construction operates Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and is expected to finish by fall 2026. Once complete, the project will enhance traffic flow and improve access for both commuters and commercial vehicles.

Winooski

In Winooski, construction along Main Street continues to significantly impact local traffic. The section between the railroad bridge and Tigan Street intersection has been reduced to a single lane, allowing northbound traffic only, with southbound vehicles detoured 24/7 via Weaver Street.

Work takes place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and city officials project the project to be completed by summer 2026. Once finished, the Main Street project will modernize underground utilities, sidewalks, and pedestrian infrastructure, forming part of Winooski’s downtown revitalization efforts.

Bolton

In Bolton, work to repair the road and stabilize the slope will close Duxbury Road between the footbridge and Honey Hollow Road to all traffic from Oct. 20 through Nov. 18. During the closure, Waterbury-bound vehicles will be detoured via Route 2.

The project aims to restore roadway safety and prevent erosion damage in the area after repeated weather-related impacts.

Public Advisory

Local officials and the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) continue to advise drivers to stay alert, follow posted detours, and allow for extra travel time while navigating construction zones.
