According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the crash occurred when the driver of the semi truck fell asleep at the wheel. Investigators said the vehicle left the roadway and struck the Hetzel building, also colliding with an unoccupied Ford Explorer that was parked nearby at the time of the incident.

Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the crash was reported. The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and officials confirmed that the Ford Explorer involved in the crash was unoccupied.

The impact caused visible damage to the building, raising concerns about its structural integrity. In response, the City of Auburn announced that a licensed structural engineer would evaluate the building to determine whether it is stable and safe, and to develop a plan to prevent further damage or potential collapse.

City officials have placed barriers and caution tape around the affected area and are advising residents, pedestrians, and motorists to remain behind those barriers while the evaluation is underway. Officials emphasized that the restrictions are in place as a precautionary measure to protect public safety while inspections continue.

The crash occurred near a busy highway intersection, and while traffic has not been fully shut down, drivers are being urged to slow down and remain alert when traveling through the area. City leaders said additional traffic controls or closures could be implemented if engineers determine they are necessary.

Officials noted that structural evaluations can take time, particularly when buildings sustain impact damage from large vehicles. Once the assessment is complete, the city will determine whether repairs, reinforcement, or partial demolition is required to secure the site.

The City of Auburn said it will provide updates as more information becomes available and as decisions are made regarding the building’s future and any long-term safety measures.
