A major sports and entertainment construction project is advancing in Washington, D.C., with the selection of the construction team for a new stadium at the former RFK Stadium site. Clark Construction Group, Mortenson and Smoot Construction Company of Washington, D.C., have formed a joint venture to deliver the Washington Commanders' planned home venue.
The approximately 1.8-million-square-foot enclosed stadium is planned to accommodate about 65,000 spectators. The facility will be part of a larger 180-acre redevelopment area that is planned to include additional residential, commercial, entertainment and public-space components.
The venue is being designed as a roofed, climate-controlled facility capable of supporting sports, concerts and other events throughout the year. Project plans also incorporate technology and sustainability features as part of the stadium's design.
The construction joint venture brings together builders with experience delivering large sports facilities. Clark Construction Group has worked on Washington-area venues including Nationals Park and Capital One Arena, while Mortenson has delivered NFL facilities including Allegiant Stadium and U.S. Bank Stadium.
Enabling work at the former RFK site began in June 2026. The main stadium construction phase is expected to begin in spring 2027, with completion targeted for spring 2030.
The stadium will occupy part of the larger RFK campus, which the National Capital Planning Commission has identified as an approximately 180-acre redevelopment area. The broader plan calls for a mixed-use, transit-oriented riverfront district with housing, hotels, offices, retail, restaurants, parks, recreation facilities and other neighborhood amenities.
The stadium itself is expected to support year-round activity and serve as a venue for sporting, arts and cultural events. Federal planning documents identify the project as a 65,000-person roofed stadium intended to anchor redevelopment of the surrounding campus.
The project also includes local participation requirements, with the development emphasizing Certified Business Enterprise participation and employment opportunities for D.C. residents.
The builder selection moves one of Washington, D.C.'s largest planned sports construction programs toward its main construction phase. For contractors and construction owners, the project represents a large-scale stadium program combined with broader site and infrastructure redevelopment, creating work across vertical construction and the surrounding mixed-use campus.
With enabling work already underway and primary stadium construction scheduled for spring 2027, the project is entering the next stage of development ahead of its targeted 2030 completion.
