The City of Columbia has issued a revised completion timeline for phase three of construction on the roundabout at Route K and Old Plank Road, extending the project’s end date for the second time this month.

According to a news release from the Columbia Public Works Department issued Monday, the current phase of construction is now expected to wrap up by 5 p.m. on Dec. 31. The most recent update replaces an earlier projection that set the completion date for Dec. 26. Initial plans had called for the work to be finished by Dec. 5.
City officials said the latest delay is tied to roadway paving work that has already been completed but requires additional curing time before traffic can safely return to the area. Pavement connecting surrounding streets to the roundabout has been poured, but Public Works officials emphasized that reopening Route K before the surface has fully cured could compromise durability and long-term safety.

The extended construction timeline continues to affect traffic patterns along Route K, a key corridor for commuters and local businesses. Past reporting by KOMU 8 has highlighted concerns from business owners who say reduced traffic flow has hurt customer visits and visibility during the busy holiday season.
With through traffic still restricted, drivers are being urged to follow posted detour routes, watch for construction signage, and proceed cautiously through the work zone as crews complete the final phase of the project.
City officials did not indicate whether additional delays are anticipated but said the extra curing time is necessary to ensure the roadway meets safety and performance standards before reopening. Once phase three is complete, traffic is expected to resume normal patterns through the newly constructed roundabout.
Residents seeking updates on road conditions or project timelines are encouraged to monitor City of Columbia Public Works announcements as the Dec. 31 target date approaches.
