Construction Begins on 26-Story Building Next to High Bridge

New York City's oldest bridge, the historic High Bridge, will soon have a massive neighbor that will change the skyline and the view that many Bronx residents have cherished for years.

Earlier in 2024, Samaritan Daytop Village, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families dealing with addiction, homelessness, and other social challenges, demolished a former Carmelite monastery it had purchased in 1982.

Now, construction is underway for a 26-story mixed-use development called The Highbridge. The project will consist of 421 residential units spread across 400,000 square feet of space, with completion expected in 2027. Designed by Magnusson Architecture and Planning, PC, The Highbridge will include 125 units available through NYC’s Housing Connect lottery for those who qualify, while the remaining units will be dedicated to housing the unhoused and families in need.

Out of the total, 190 units will be reserved for unhoused families and individuals, and 106 units will be transitional housing for families, with one unit reserved for a live-in superintendent. The supportive housing residents will have access to a variety of social services, including case management through Samaritan Daytop Village, which offers referrals to mental health services, primary care, and more.

The development will also feature several amenities, including community facilities, landscaped walking trails, outdoor rooftop recreational areas, and 24/7 security.

The remaining units available to the general public will hopefully provide affordable housing options, though there are concerns about how accessible they will truly be for those in need.

The expected completion date for The Highbridge is in 2027, marking a significant transformation in the neighborhood and the area surrounding the iconic High Bridge.
