Modernizing aging rail infrastructure requires careful coordination to minimize service disruptions while improving long-term transportation capacity. The STV-AECOM joint venture has been recognized with a 2026 Distinguished Engineering Award from the New Jersey Alliance for Action for its role in delivering the Portal North Bridge Replacement project in partnership with NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak and other regional stakeholders.
The joint venture provided construction management and inspection services for the replacement of the Portal Bridge over the Hackensack River, one of the Northeast Corridor's critical rail crossings.
The project required extensive coordination among multiple agencies while construction progressed within one of the nation's busiest passenger rail corridors. Key milestones included live cutovers of active rail lines, allowing train operations to transition to the new bridge while maintaining continuous rail service.
The replacement structure converts the former movable swing bridge into a high-level fixed-span crossing designed to support increased train speeds and greater operational capacity.
Construction included transporting and installing three large network tied-arch bridge spans that were assembled off site before being moved by barge through the Hudson River and positioned across the Hackensack River.
The new bridge replaces infrastructure that had experienced operational limitations due to its age and the need for frequent openings to accommodate marine traffic. Those constraints had affected rail service reliability for approximately 200,000 daily passengers using the Northeast Corridor.
The bridge also supports broader modernization efforts under the Gateway Program, which is intended to improve rail capacity and reliability across the Northeast Corridor.
The Portal North Bridge Replacement demonstrates the growing importance of complex rail infrastructure renewal projects that improve operational resilience while maintaining active transportation service during construction.
