Construction Begins on Zoo Drive in Billings to Ease Traffic and Improve Safety

BILLINGS, Mont. – A major infrastructure upgrade is underway in Billings as the Zoo Drive Improvements project officially begins this June, aiming to enhance both traffic flow and safety along a key commuter and freight corridor.

The project, a collaborative effort between the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and construction contractor Knife River, includes significant upgrades to the Interstate 90 eastbound on- and off-ramps at the Zoo Drive Interchange. As traffic volumes have steadily increased in the area due to residential and commercial growth, transportation officials say the improvements are long overdue.

"Drivers can expect minor delays due to shoulder work and construction equipment," MDT stated, adding that crews will maintain access as much as possible throughout the summer.

A notable disruption will occur later in the season. A two-week closure of the intersection at Zoo Drive, Gabel Road, and Pierce Parkway is scheduled for late summer or early fall to allow for intersection modifications. During this time, motorists will need to take alternate routes to access businesses and homes in the area.

The most visible transformation will be the expansion of Zoo Drive into a five-lane road, including a center turn lane at intersections to ease left-turn movements and reduce traffic backups. In addition, a section of Gabel Road leading to Zoo Drive will be widened, adding a second left-turn lane to streamline access onto Zoo Drive and improve traffic throughput.

MDT is urging commuters to plan for delays and use alternate routes during construction to help alleviate congestion. "MDT encourages the public to use alternate routes to minimize delays and congestion," the agency said in a statement.

The timeline for completion stretches into November 2025, contingent upon weather and unforeseen construction conditions. Officials emphasize that communication will be key throughout the project. MDT will provide regular updates and has launched an online portal for the public. Those interested can follow progress or ask questions by visiting the Zoo Drive Project page or emailing zoodrive@dowl.com.

This infrastructure improvement is part of a broader state initiative to upgrade key transportation routes, making them safer and more efficient for Montana drivers. Local residents and businesses have expressed cautious optimism.

“It’s been needed for a while,” said Billings resident Carla Jensen, who commutes daily via Zoo Drive. “The traffic has gotten heavier and left turns are almost impossible during peak hours. I just hope they keep us updated.”
