Construction employment increased in July as the U.S. labor market continued to add private-sector jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The department reported Aug. 7 that private-sector employment rose by 30,000 jobs during July, bringing the year-to-date increase to 426,000 jobs. Construction and manufacturing were among the sectors that recorded gains during the month.
The employment figures provide an indication of continued labor demand across construction-related activities as investment moves into projects and industrial facilities throughout the country.
The Labor Department attributed employment gains in construction and manufacturing to substantial investment activity in the U.S. Acting Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling said both sectors are benefiting from investment flowing into the country.
For construction owners and contractors, the employment increase comes as the industry continues to require workers across project delivery, skilled trades and related activities. Construction's July job growth also contributes to the broader private-sector employment increase recorded during 2026.
Construction employment trends remain important for contractors and developers managing project schedules and labor requirements. Additional hiring can help expand available capacity as construction activity moves forward, while continued employment growth also underscores the importance of maintaining access to skilled workers.
The July report adds to the federal employment data being monitored by construction companies and other industry stakeholders as they assess labor conditions and investment activity.
