Construction Progresses on New IU Downtown Hospital and Campus

INDIANAPOLIS — Construction is moving forward on Indiana University’s new $4.3 billion downtown hospital and campus. However, drivers should take note of upcoming road closures. Starting Monday, all southbound lanes on Capitol Avenue between 14th and 16th streets will be closed, with traffic being detoured to Meridian Street. This full closure will last until March 12, after which one lane will reopen.

The project, which broke ground in 2022, is on schedule for completion by the fourth quarter of 2027. To date, 2.7 million construction hours have been logged, with 1,300 workers on-site daily.

The new hospital will span a 44-acre campus and feature three 16-story towers connected by walkways and tunnels. The hospital will offer 864 licensed beds, 50 operating rooms, and 380 outpatient exam rooms. Construction continues on both the exterior and interior of the buildings.

Mikalia Massey, a foreman and construction worker, shared her enthusiasm for the project, especially as it coincides with Women in Construction Week. “Being a part of it is just amazing,” she said. “Women in construction, we’ve come a long way. I am very happy to be a part of it.”

IU Health's interim president for the Metro Region, Michele Saysana, emphasized the long-term impact of the project: “We are building this not just for us, but for those to come. This project really transforms how we can deliver care for patients.”

The hospital's completion is expected by the end of 2027, marking a milestone that workers like Massey are proud to contribute to. “I always drive past here, and years from now, I’ll be able to say I was a part of this.”
